A Flydubai flight traveling from Dubai to Tel Aviv was forced into an emergency situation after a violent confrontation broke out inside the cockpit. The aircraft was carrying 174 passengers, and the incident happened while the plane was flying over Oman. Despite the chaos, the injured pilot, passengers, crew members and other qualified pilots worked together to prevent a potentially devastating outcome.
What Happened Inside the Cockpit?
According to reports, the flight encountered a serious crisis when one pilot attacked his fellow pilot with a knife. The injured pilot, Smith M. was reportedly bleeding heavily but managed to activate the cockpit-door switch, allowing crew members and passengers to enter and assist.
The situation caused the aircraft to lose altitude rapidly. Passenger accounts indicated that the plane descended by roughly 14,000 feet in less than half a minute, creating panic among those onboard.
Passengers Rushed to Help
Several passengers reportedly entered the cockpit and helped restrain the attacking pilot.
One passenger, Yaniv Hayun, who works as a plumber, said he briefly took hold of the aircraft’s controls while others struggled with the attacker. His actions helped stabilize the situation until crew members could take over the controls.
Another passenger, dentist Shota Musayev, reportedly rushed to assist the injured pilot. He described the pilot as suffering serious wounds and significant blood loss.
Passengers and crew members also used available materials to restrain the attacker, according to accounts cited in the report.
Other Pilots Took Control
The aircraft had additional pilots who were not operating the flight at the time. As the emergency unfolded, they entered the cockpit and took responsibility for flying the aircraft.
They eventually managed to stabilize the plane and divert it to Tabuk in northwestern Saudi Arabia, where an emergency landing was carried out.
Injured Pilot Receives Treatment
The injured pilot was taken to a hospital in Saudi Arabia for treatment. Reports said he underwent surgery and was later described as being in stable condition.
The passengers were subsequently taken safely from Saudi Arabia to Israel. Meanwhile, the pilot accused of attacking his colleague was reportedly detained by Saudi authorities for questioning.
A Flight Saved by Collective Action
The incident highlights how quickly an aviation emergency can develop and how the actions of multiple people can become crucial in a crisis.
From the injured pilot opening the cockpit door to passengers assisting inside the cockpit and qualified pilots taking control of the aircraft, several individuals played different roles in bringing the emergency under control.
The full circumstances surrounding the cockpit confrontation and the suspected motive remained subject to investigation at the time of the reports.
