A massive wildfire known as the Hawk Fire is rapidly spreading near Reno, Nevada, prompting evacuations and a state of emergency in several communities.
The fire started on Saturday and, fueled by strong winds, low humidity, and dry vegetation, quickly grew in size. By Saturday night, authorities estimated that the flames had burned more than 10,500 acres.
Given the fire’s rapid spread and the threat to residential areas, Nevada Governor Joe Lombardo declared a state of emergency in Washoe County. State resources were also activated to support emergency and protection efforts in the affected communities.
Evacuation orders were expanded as the fire advanced. According to authorities, nearly 14,000 homes were placed under evacuation orders, while the area of highest alert extended to the vicinity of the University of Nevada, Reno.
Hundreds of firefighters and emergency crews are working to contain the flames and protect homes and infrastructure. Authorities also mobilized the Nevada National Guard to support air operations and security in evacuated areas.
The fire also caused power outages and partial road closures, further complicating the situation. Authorities have asked residents to strictly follow evacuation instructions and remain alert for new warnings.
